Time and time again, while in workshops or talking with clients, I have stated that if, heaven forbids, I were only allowed one essential oil, it would have to be frankincense, Boswellia Carterri or Sacra.
The frankincense trees grow well in the Southern Arabian desert, where most the finest frankincense is cultivated and harvested, with the trees being passed down from generation to generation as it has been for thousands of years. There are two other regions in Africa which are now beginning to produce some lovely frankincense as well, but in my humble opinion, the finest comes from the Southern Arabian region.
Unfortunately, frankincense has just gone on the endangered species list, which is making it harder to come by and causing a dramatic increase in the price, as is happening with many essential oils the world over.
The other factor bringing a great deal of attention to frankincense are the recent scientific studies released in the last few years that have verified the anti-tumoral properties of frankincense.
The latest study involving frankincense has shown that frankincense essential oil is causing cell apoptosis, or death, in breast cancer cells. Great news in the fight to beat breast cancer. While I would also recommend a radical life change to anyone who is dealing with cancer, frankincense is proving to be a formidable ally in the journey as well.
In addition to the anti-tumoral properties of frankincense, it is a wonderful respiratory oil, great antiviral, anti-bacterial, can be very calming and soothing to the central nervous system, and has wonderful psychoactive properties, which is the main reason it has been used in religious and spiritual ceremony for thousands of years.
The psychoactive properties bring a change in awareness and was the main reason the 3 Wise Men brought the oil to baby Jesus, knowing it would be a valuable tool to assist Jesus in maintaining a strong connection to the Divine. The psychoactive properties are the main reason the frankincense tears are still burned in many Churches today, to sanctify the Church and bring an altered state of awareness to the parishioners, in the hopes that the Divine becomes much more accessible. In fact, 75% of the frankincense produced in the world today is purchased by the Church.
It is the most powerful spiritual oil, and induces deep states of meditation, making it a perfect tool to use before any meditation practice, yoga, prayer or for relaxing the mind and body. While there may be other essential oils that might be more powerful for conditions in the body, there are very few that can compare with the spiritual properties of frankincense.
So while I have hundreds of bottles of essential oils in my meditation temple, very few hold the place of honor as frankincense continues to do!
